RIP Hardcore Erlang

Crap, crap, and double crap:

“RIP Hardcore Erlang. My publisher has been notified. I will not be the Erlang expert sought for web apps. Trading systems are my future.” — Joel Reymont on the future of his book, Hardcore Erlang.

I was so looking forward to this book. Erlang really needs a follow up to Joe’s excellent Programming Erlang. I hope someone else steps up to write this book.

  • I'm publishing content from the unwritten book on my blog. This is easier for me that committing to publishing the book and lets me focus on the bits of Erlang I'm truly interested in. Take a look at the long post on parsing binary data, for example. Not exciting but more exciting stuff will come down the road.
  • Michael Campbell
Just wait till next week with Joel; another language, another business domain. Come March, he'll be into "Hardcore Io", writing a new MMORPG or somesuch.
  • I was thinking about that last night, and I'm not really sure. Something that shows off OTP and mnesia, I think. I keep coming back to some sort of game server or maybe a MUD.
  • Bummer! I was looking forward to this too.

I know Joel has his poker server, and was talking about building a stock exchange. What do you think would make a good canonical demo app for a "Hardcore Erlang" book?
